Winter’s Tales Illuminations
Beaulieu is launching its first magical Christmas illuminations with a series of eight special Winter’s Tales evenings to be held in December.
See Palace House come to life after dark as the stunning light installations show friendly mice scuttling along the kitchen plate shelf, snow falling on family portraits and a festive seascape of the popular Christmas carol I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In at the Montagu family home.
Walk under the illuminated archway at the entrance to the Victorian garden and follow the beautifully lit pathway to enjoy the unique opportunity of exploring Palace House by candlelight on December 9-11, 16-18and 21-22.
As you enter the house, pass the warming flames of two towering flambeaux before experiencing the festive magic inside.
Step into the Portrait Gallery to see the Montagu family album Christmas table, where a light ‘time machine’ shows family childhoods of the past and present using toys from Beaulieu’s collection.
To complement Beaulieu’s Victorian Christmas, see the fairy tale winter scene of a life-size, snow-dusted gingerbread house in the courtyard with swirling light-show snow flurries falling on the scene.
Spot the shadow of a cat in the larder as it stalks the mice ‘dancing’ on the kitchen shelf. Upstairs in the Upper Drawing Room, see the model of Buckler’s Hard-built Agamemnon, which is joined by HMS Euryalus and HMS Swiftsure from the Battle of Trafalgar, for a lyrical light show version of I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In.
Then head outside to see one of the largest outdoor illuminated Christmas trees in the New Forest, which stands beside the National Motor Museum in the grounds of the attraction.
A Fairy Tale Victorian Christmas
A magical fairy tale Victorian Christmas at Beaulieu will include a life-size gingerbread house in the courtyard at Palace House, storytelling, games and carol singing around the grand piano from December 17th – January 2nd.
Visit the gingerbread house in a snow-dusted glade for a unique photo opportunity, which is perfect for the family Christmas card, and smell spices wafting from the cook baking gingerbread men in the Victorian kitchen.
Be enchanted by story telling with Christmas fairy tales and follow the fairy tale-themed quiz trail around Palace House and the rest of the attraction. You may also be lucky enough to spot the ‘Mouse in the House’ before claiming your quiz trail reward.
Then be transported back in time to a Victorian Christmas, with carol singing around the grand piano in the Lower Drawing Room. Enjoy the charm of traditional decorations with presents under the tree and Victorian toys including a rocking horse and push-along bear at Palace House, which has been home to the Montagu family since 1538. Drink a glass of hot fruit punch in front of the roaring log fire and see the impressive dining hall table, which will be dressed ready for Christmas day.
Then head out into the grounds of the attraction to see one of the largest outdoor Christmas trees in the New Forest by the National Motor Museum, which is home to more than 250 vehicles from throughout motoring history.
Be inspired by Christmas presents, from motoring memorabilia to children’s toys in the Visitor Reception Gift Shop. While the Kitchen Shop at Palace House offers traditional gifts, from tasty preserves to silverware and country house gifts.
